Colonels News · Signed for College

Surrounded by their families, friends, coaches and teachers five Magruder High School student-athletes were celebrated Thursday morning in a signing ceremony. Danielle Fuentes (UMBC), Chloe Johnson (Ohio State), Andrew Juarez (Alderson Broaddus), Jason Medrano (Hagerstown CC) and Jake Wellek (St. Mary’s) were all recognized.

“Playing a sport in college — at Division I, II or III — represents a tremendous opportunity for these young men and women on and off the field,” Magruder Athletic Director Silas Cheung said. “I am proud of their accomplishments as Magruder Colonels, and excited to watch these student-athletes grow and develop over the next four years.”

Principal Mr. Evans also praised the student-athletes’ efforts, and believes the Magruder experience has prepared them for future success. “It’s no small feat,” he said. “… They’ve done some outstanding things.”

Danielle Fuentes, Soccer, UMBC
“It was the best offer for me. UMBC is close to home, the facilities are great and the coaching staff is nice.”

Chloe Johnson, Lacrosse, Ohio State
“I really enjoyed the relationship with the coaches and the campus.”

Andrew Juarez, Football, Alderson Broaddus (W. Va.)
“I chose AB because as soon as I got there, it felt like home. I think I can excel at what I do over there. They value academics over sports, and plan for my future after football, not just the 4 years of being there. My family and I believe it was the best choice to make!”

Jason Medrano, Soccer, Hagerstown Community College
“It was the best place for me and close to home. The environment around the program is great and I hope to eventually transfer [to a four-year school].”

Jake Wellek, Basketball, St. Mary’s College (MD)
“It’s been my dream to play college basketball. The coach is nice and they also have my major (biology).”
