Magruder alumni Helen Maroulis and Tony Howard were recently inducted into the Maryland Wrestling Hall of Fame. Maroulis, the first female to place at the MPSSAA Wrestling Tournament, was the first American woman to win a gold medal in the Olympics. Howard, a dominating force in the late 1990s and early 2000s, was a 3-time state champion.
“It’s exciting to see Magruder’s two most accomplished wrestler going into the Maryland Wrestling Hall of Fame,” former Magruder wrestling coach Max Sartoph said. “I never coached Tony, but it was always a thrill to watch him wrestle and beat the best of the best. … I am lucky enough to have coached Helen. She never backed down from an opponent. I always knew she would go on to do something amazing.”
